NRC extends Perry license for 20 years

By ExchangeMonitor

Vistra Corp’s Perry Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 operating license has been renewed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission through November 2046.

The 1,268-megawatt nuclear plant in Perry, Ohio is a single-unit plant. The plant first began operation in 1986 and is currently operating under its initial 40-year license.

Perry was initially planned to be a two-unit plant, but the second unit’s construction was suspended and cancelled in 1994

Vistra Corp, a power generation company based in Irving, Texas, said the Perry plant was the last one of its six nuclear reactors to apply and receive its license extension, according to its Monday press release.

The Texas power company said each reactor is licensed to operate for a total of 60 years.

The initial license renewal application for the Perry nuclear plant was submitted by Energy Harbor in 2023. However, Energy Harbor was acquired by Vistra Corp. in March 2024.
