The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has identified an apparent violation at the BWXT Nuclear Operations Group (NOG), Inc., facility in Lynchburg, Va.
According to an NRC letter to BWXT on Thursday, the apparent violation is associated with “a failure to identify a high consequence accident sequence related to potential backflow of uranium bearing solution to a non-favorable geometry hot water heater in the Uranium Recovery Facility.”
The finding was identified during NRC inspections conducted from July 1 through Sept. 30 at the facility. The NRC is evaluating the significance of the finding. NRC staff and BWXT representatives discussed the results of the inspections during exit meetings held on Aug. 18 and Oct. 13, according to the NRC.
