NRC issues final safety evaluation for TerraPower’s Kemmerer Unit 1

By ExchangeMonitor

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has completed the final safety evaluation for TerraPower’s Natrium reactor in Kemmerer, Wyo.

NRC, which completed the evaluation a month ahead of its accelerated schedule, concluded that there are no safety concerns that would prevent issuing TerraPower its construction permit, according to its Monday press release.

The company filed its construction permit application for the Kemmerer Natrium project in March 2024 and it was accepted for review in May 2024. NRC originally planned to complete by August 2026 but pivoted to an accelerated schedule of Dec. 31, 2025.

The Natrium reactor is designed to be a 345-megawatt sodium fast reactor with a molten salt-based energy storage system.

NRC’s Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards independently reviewed new safety issues of TerraPower’s construction permit application. The committee’s review also supports the issuance of the construction permit for the Kemmerer reactor.

The committee submitted the results of its review to the NRC on Nov. 16, according to the release.

With both the review of TerraPower’s final safety evaluation and environmental impact statement completed, NRC staff will provide the documents to the Commission for the final phase of the licensing process in the coming weeks.

NRC completed the review of TerraPower’s final environmental impact statement in October.
