The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has scheduled a public meeting Oct. 15 to take comments on Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation’s proposal to release a tract of land at its plant site in Burlington, Kansas.
Wolf Creek seeks approval to donate 4.46 acres of land under its NRC reactor license to a privately-owned cemetery, the Stringtown Cemetery Board, according to its Aug. 26 request letter to NRC.
The NRC meeting is planned at New Strawn Fire Station, 301 W Lake Road, New Strawn, Kan. from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Central Time. As of Wednesday, the meeting is still scheduled despite the ongoing government shutdown, according to the NRC website.
Comments can be submitted to NRC until Oct.15 at 11:59 Eastern Time, according to NRC’s Sept. 26 Regulations notice.
“The parcel in question is intended for donation to an already existing, privately owned cemetery located nearby, and the land being offered lies further north extending the cemetery away from the exclusion area and reinforcing its separation from operations,” Wolf Creek said in its request.
The nuclear operator said it requests that the approval of its land request be granted by Dec. 31.
Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station is the sole nuclear power plant operating in Kansas and generates 1,200 megawatts of electricity.
