Representatives from SHINE Medical Technologies are scheduled to appear at a Nuclear Regulatory Commission hearing on Dec. 15. to discuss the company’s permit application for a radioisotope production facility in Janesville, Wis.
The new plant, scheduled for completion in 2018, would reportedly satisfy more than half the U.S. demand for molybdenum-99 while employing about 150 people. Molybdenum-99 is used in 20 million medical procedures across the U.S. annually.
Through the Global Threat Reduction Initiative, the federal government has sought to increase domestic supply of molybdenum-99 with the goal of minimizing civilian use of highly enriched uranium. The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration has awarded more than $25 million to SHINE’s Janesville project.
The hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. in the Commissioners’ Conference Room of NRC headquarters, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Md. Officials will discuss safety and environmental matters related to the permit request.
