The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a hybrid question and answer session Tuesday afternoon to discuss ways the agency can improve procedures for subsequent license renewals.
The meeting will take place at NRC’s headquarters in Rockville, Md. from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time. It can also be viewed through Microsoft Teams.
In addition to the NRC’s Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, the Nuclear Energy Institute will participate in the session. While NRC will be discussing technical and regulatory issues with the public, the agency will “not [be] actively soliciting comments towards regulatory decisions at this meeting,” according to the meeting’s memo.
Nuclear plants start off with an initial NRC license of 40 years, which can be renewed for 20 years. A subsequent or second license renewal could potentially extend a plant’s operating lifespan from 60 years to 80 years.
NRC issued subsequent license renewals for 11 reactors in 2025, according to the agency’s website.
