NRC taps Martin as secretary of the commission

By ExchangeMonitor

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has chosen Jody Martin to serve as the secretary of commission, effective in July, the agency said June 10.

Martin, who currently serves as the deputy director of the NRC’s Office of International Programs, will succeed Carrie Safford, who is set to leave NRC this summer after being with the agency for 18 years.

The Office of the Secretary is responsible for providing administrative management support to the commission and helping implement its decisions, NRC said in a press release. The secretary, Martin, will lead the office that maintains the commission’s adjudicatory and rulemaking dockets, oversees the historical records collection and supervises the agency’s historical program, according to the release.

“The commission is demonstrating it can move quickly without sacrificing rigor or collegiality,” NRC Chairman Ho Nieh said. “Jody’s leadership and expertise will help us continue on this trajectory to enable and accelerate the safe and secure use of nuclear technology.”

Martin has been with NRC since 2006 and has served in various high-level management roles during his tenure. Martin started his time with the agency through the Honor Law Graduate Program in the NRC’s Office of General Counsel. He served in many management positions in the Office of General Counsel, including legal counsel for former NRC commissioner Jeffrey Baran.

Prior to being the deputy director of the Office of International Programs, Martin was the associate director for operations in the NRC’s Office of the Executive Director for Operations. From 2020 to 2024, he served as the director of the Office of Commission Appellate Adjudication, according to the release.

Martin is a graduate of the University of Delaware and the George Washington University School of Law. He is also a graduate of NRC’s senior executive service candidate development program.
