The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting in Piketon, Ohio, tonight to discuss the agency’s recent review of safety performance at USEC’s American Centrifuge Lead Cascade Facility with USEC officials. The review, which covered a period from July 2010 through January 2011, found no areas needing improvement in safety operations, radiological controls, facility support, and special topics. But the review did not encompass the June 2011 incident at the facility in which a loss of power led to the failure of multiple centrifuges, an event the NRC is still evaluating. “The NRC will re-evaluate the inspection program for the current assessment period following the completion of our ongoing inspection of the event that occurred in June 2011 that resulted in the failure of multiple centrifuges,” according to a March 12 letter to USEC from NRC Division of Fuel Facility Inspection Director Anthony Gody.
