Holtec submitted its plan in August 2024 and last modified it in May. The company plans to finish the decommissioning of the New Jersey plant and conduct final status surveys for release of the location by 2029.
NRC staff accepted Holtec’s plan and its additions for a review in June.
While the NRC will hold the public meeting this month, the agency will accept public comments until Oct. 14, according to a Federal Register notice.
Oyster Creek plant is a single boiling water reactor which previously operated with a capacity of around 650 megawatts. It first began operation in 1969 and shut down in 2018. Holtec bought the plant from Exelon in 2019 and has been decommissioning it since then.
Last month, Holtec discussed plans with the New Jersey officials about potentially using the Oyster Creek site for a new hybrid nuclear and solar power plant.
