The Nuclear Company announced last week it is opening a primary engineering and construction office in Columbia, S.C.
The private new nuclear deployment company is pursuing a “design once, build many” approach to accelerate deployment of a new fleet of nuclear energy units. The company took the approach as a response to the United States’s increasing demand for energy, as stated in its April 24 press release.
As South Carolina ranks as the third-largest nuclear-producing state in the U.S., the company said the state offers strategic advantages, such as a robust energy infrastructure and leaders committed to the United States’ nuclear resurgence.
The Nuclear Company’s new office in Columbia is expected to create over 100 jobs while the company explores for potential sites for its first six gigawatt of nuclear reactors, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) said in his April 24 press release.
The Nuclear Company was founded in 2023 by Jonathan Webb, Patrick Maloney and Kiran Bhatraju, according to the company’s website. The company apparently also has an office in Washington, D.C.
Along with the new office, the company also announced that it completed its Series A funding round. Led by Eclipse, the round includes follow-on investments from all previous investors which are CIV, Goldcrest Ventures, MCJ Collective, True Ventures and Wonder Ventures.
Former Tesla executive and partner at Eclipse Greg Reichow has joined The Nuclear Company’s board.
