NuScale Power, the Oregon-based developer of small modular reactor technology, has selected James Canafax as its chief legal officer and corporate secretary, the company said Monday.
Canafax was most recently general counsel and chief compliance officer at Maritime Partners, NuScale said in a press release.
Canafax is also a former senior vice president and general counsel at BWX Technologies, which he left in 2018. He also held key legal positions at BWXT predecessor companies, according to Canafax’s Linked page.
In the release, NuScale described Canafax as a seasoned attorney and manager who has spent decades in nuclear legal and regulatory matters. “His extensive experience in the nuclear industry, deep familiarity with the regulatory environment and track record of guiding organizations through key growth periods make him uniquely suited to support NuScale at this important moment for our company,” said NuScale President and CEO John Hopkins.
Canafax holds a juris doctor from Harvard Law School and a bachelor of science in international trade and finance from Louisiana State University, according to NuScale. He has also completed a nuclear reactor technology course for executives at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Founded in 2007, NuScale is the first company to have its small modular reactor designs certified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
