NWTRB summer meeting set for Aug. 27

By ExchangeMonitor

The Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy will brief the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board later this month on DOE management of high-level radioactive waste and spent fuel.

The hybrid summer meeting, announced recently by the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board (NWTRB), is scheduled Wednesday Aug. 27. The all-day session kicks off at 8 a.m. Eastern Time at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel at 1700 Richmond Highway in Arlington, Va.

Senior management from DOE-Nuclear Energy will also report on the work of its Office of Disposal Research & Development, the Office of Storage & Transportation and the Office of Consent-Based Siting, according to the NWTRB July 25 press release.

The meeting, which runs through 4 p.m., can be viewed online. There will be opportunities for public comment. Instructions for viewing and joining the meeting online will be available on the NWTRB website one week beforehand. DOE presentations will be available online before the meeting.

According to its website, the NWTRB was set up by an act of congress in 1987 to “perform unbiased and ongoing technical and scientific peer review” of DOE waste management. This includes packaging and storage, transport, geologic disposal and worldwide progress on deep underground waste disposal.

The review board is currently down to one member, NWTRB Chairman Peter Swift, after the Donald Trump White House moved to purge the panel of members appointed during Joe Biden’s administration.
