NWTRB TO DISCUSS SUITABILITY OF SALT AS DISPOSAL MEDIUM

By ExchangeMonitor

The U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board will be host a public meeting in Albuquerque, N.M. next month to discuss Department of Energy research and development results regarding the suitability of salt as a medium for geological disposal of spent fuel and high level nuclear waste. The meeting, scheduled for March 19, will feature presentations from DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy concerning a performance assessment modeling of a generic salt disposal system for SNF and HLW, coupled models for thermal-hydrological-chemical and thermal-hydrological-mechanical processes in a salt repository, and brine migration experimental studies for salt repositories, according to a release. The NWTRB also expects to receive an update on DOE’s activities to aid in the licensing review of Yucca Mountain.
