OPPD Removes All Fuel From Fort Calhoun

By ExchangeMonitor

All spent fuel has been permanently removed from the Fort Calhoun Station’s reactor vessel and moved into a spent fuel pool, the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) told the Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently.

Files made publicly available Tuesday show OPPD filed its certification with NRC Nov. 13. Permanent removal means OPPD can no longer operate the reactor or move fuel into the reactor vessel.

The OPPD Board of Directors unanimously approved Fort Calhoun’s closure in June, calling it a tough economic decision. OPPD ceased plant operations on Oct. 24. Located about 20 miles north of Omaha, Fort Calhoun was America’s smallest operating nuclear power plant.
