Oyster Creek Spent Fuel All in Dry Storage, Holtec Says

By ExchangeMonitor

The company in charge of decommissioning Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in New Jersey finished moving the plant’s spent fuel inventory into dry storage last week, according to a press release.

Oyster Creek’s decommissioning is “on track for becoming the most expedited decommissioning program in the nation’s history,” Holtec International said in a press release Friday. The company finished moving its last dry storage canister to the Fork River, N.J. nuclear plant’s onsite storage pad on the same day. Holtec has moved 33 of these canisters since February, the statement said.

The plant, which shut down in September 2018, is now completely defueled — a feat that Holtec said Friday is “a new world record.”

The Camden, N.J.-based nuclear services company will move forward with decommissioning Oyster Creek after a judge in February ratified its settlement agreement with the plant’s host community of Lacey Township, N.J. As part of the settlement, Holtec will provide daily updates to the township and include it in its safety evaluation correspondence with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The company also pledged to maintain a $10 million overflow storage cask at its headquarters.

Holtec has said that it expects decommissioning Oyster Creek to wrap up by 2025.
