PEJ, Westinghouse begin ordering long-lead items for Poland nuclear plant

Polish company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) has authorized Westinghouse to start procuring long-lead reactor components for its first AP1000 reactor in Choczewo, Poland.

According to Westinghouse’s Oct. 8 press release, this order would cover six of the plant’s reactor components, which include the reactor containment along with its related structural modules. PEJ and Westinghouse expect Polish companies that can obtain the ASME NQA-1 international quality standard, to bid for procurement contracts to provide reactor components, Westinghouse said.

The company said the production and delivery of the completed long lead components to the Lubiatowo-Kopalino nuclear site will be part of another order from PEJ. Westinghouse said PEJ plans to issue that subsequent order under the contract for the construction of the plant.

On Tuesday, Westinghouse and PEJ made its first conditional purchase Energomontaż-Północ Gdynia S.A. (EPG), FAMAK S.A., Mostostal Kielce S.A. and Mostostal Krakow S.A. to help supply safety-related modules for the first Polish AP1000 unit.

According to the Tuesday press release, the conditional purchase would cover “the CA02 Walls Module Scope for Mostostal Kielce, the CA03 Module Scope for EPG, the CA05 Walls Module Scope for Mostostal Krakow, and the CA20 Floors Module Scope for FAMAK.” Contingent on NQA-1 certification and fabrication of pre-production prototypes, Westinghouse will later award the companies for full project scope, the company said.

The procurement process takes place under an engineering development agreement between PEJ and the Bechtel-Westinghouse consortium. This comes weeks after PEJ and the Bechtel-Westinghouse signed off on main commercial terms for its engineering, procurement and construction contract for the Lubiatowo-Kopalino nuclear site.

“The ordering of long-lead items is a key milestone for this important project and helps to ensure it remains on schedule,” Dan Lipman, president of global business initiatives at Westinghouse, said in the release. “Even more importantly, this is a critical first step for [the] Polish industry to furnish nuclear-grade components for the plant and maximize its participation in Poland and in future AP1000 projects in Europe.”

PEJ and the Bechtel-Westinghouse consortium hope to have the first unit of the Lubiatowo-Kopalino nuclear power plant in Choczewo, Poland by 2036.
