Radwaste Summit to analyze nuclear waste, energy expansion

By ExchangeMonitor

SAVANNAH, GA.— Exchange Monitor’s 19th annual Radwaste Summit kicks off here Tuesday with discussions on expanding nuclear energy generation, a priority with the White House, while addressing spent fuel issues.

This year’s conference starts at 2 p.m. Eastern Time with an introduction by senior nuclear safety consultant Larry Camper followed by a panel discussion on innovative ways to handle nuclear waste.

The panelists include Joe Heckman, EnergySolutions’ president of waste management; Reinhard Knerr, the deputy manager of DOE’s Portsmouth Paducah Project Office; Robert Lewis, deputy executive director of operations for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission; and Jay Mullis, chief nuclear officer for United Cleanup Oak Ridge.

The opening panel will be moderated by Eric Knox, an Amentum vice president for strategic development for energy and environment.

There will also be a regulatory roundup featuring panelists Michael McBride who is a partner with Van Ness Feldman; Bruce Montgomery, a Nuclear Energy Institute director for decommissioning and used fuel; Frank Rusco, the Government Accountability Office director for natural resources and environment; and Thomas Summers, acting chair of the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.

The regulatory panel will be moderated by Camper.

The opening half day will wind down with a panel discussion on the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy’s waste storage and disposal programs.

The panelists include Erica Bickford, director of the storage and disposal programs within the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, along with Marla Morales who is the director for what is now known as the Office of Collaboration-Based Siting at the DOE nuclear office.

The storage and disposal panel will be moderated by Miriam Juckett, stakeholder engagement technical adviser for spent nuclear fuel management at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

The conference continues on Wednesday and Thursday. More information on Radwaste Summit is available online.
