REP. HASTINGS PRAISES NEW DOE REORG. PLANS

By ExchangeMonitor

Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.), a longtime supporter of the Department of Energy’s cleanup efforts, yesterday praised DOE’s recently announced plans to move the Office of Environmental Management to report to a new Under Secretary for Management and Performance. Hastings had been a strong opponent of DOE’s last reorganization effort, carried out two years ago, that had EM report to the Under Secretary for Nuclear Security, who also heads the National Nuclear Security Administration. “This plan addresses my longstanding concerns about moving EM under the NNSA where it would always come last in line behind weapons programs,” Hastings said in a statement. “As outlined to me, the restructuring should strengthen the EM program by providing the clear and narrow focus it needs to be successful. After a productive meeting with Secretary Moniz last week, I am encouraged by this renewed prioritization of the nuclear waste cleanup responsibilities of the federal government.” DOE’s new reorganization is set to be the topic of discussion during a “town hall” meeting to be held with Department employees today.
