ROCKY FLATS RAID NEARS 25th ANNIVERSARY

Tomorrow will mark the 25th anniversary of a federal raid on the Rocky Flats site, seen by many as the symbolic start to the Department of Energy’s cleanup program. Agents from the FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency entered the site to investigate alleged environmental violations. Rockwell International, the operator of the site at the time, would later pay a fine of $18.5 million. DOE began cleaning up Rocky Flats in the mid-1990s, and the project was completed in the fall of 2005—decades ahead of initially projected schedules.
