Round up: Rose in Tajikistan; live-fire fine; LANL promotion

By ExchangeMonitor

National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Principal Deputy Administrator Frank Rose visited Tajikistan in early October, the semiautonomous Department of Energy nuclear-weapons agency wrote in a statement this week.

Rose participated in a ribbon cutting at the Fotehobod automobile border-crossing point in the Mastchoh district of Tajikstan’s Sogd region, near the country’s western border with Uzbekistan. The NNSA No. 2 was on hand “observing the delivery of newly deployed radiation detection equipment provided by NNSA” to the central Asian country.

The National Nuclear Security Administration is fining the security provider at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for a June mishap in which someone discharged live ammunition at a firing range while someone else was standing downrange.

The NNSA proposed a $53,000 penalty, a 50% reduction from the base penalty of $106,000. NNSA knocked half off after Centerra Los Alamos took corrective action in the mishap’s wake, according to a final notice of violation dated Oct. 6.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory promoted Steven Coleman to associate laboratory Director for environment, safety, health and quality, the lab announced this week.

Starting Nov. 14, Coleman will be responsible for “ leadership, management, oversight, strategic planning and execution” of environmental and safety matters across the entire nuclear-weapons design lab, according to the statement.

Industry and government figures this week celebrated Nuclear Science Week by highlighting current and future nuclear power projects.

The annual Nuclear Science Week event, held this year at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., featured prominent figures from the nuclear weapons complex including the Department of Energy’s Assistant Secretary of Nuclear Energy Kathryn Huff and Jill Hruby, administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration.
