The Nuclear Regulatory Commission yesterday announced that Mark Satorius, head of the Office of Federal and State Materials and Environmental Management, will replace current Executive Director of Operations Bill Borchardt effective Aug. 25. The position, appointed by NRC Chairman Allison Macfarlane, serves as the chief operating officer of the NRC, and directs the operational and administrative functions for the day-to-day operations of the agency. “I am confident in Mark’s technical competence and unwavering commitment to safety and security,” Macfarlane said in a July 16 release. “He will bring energy, enthusiasm and new ideas to the task of ensuring that our agency remains focused on our core mission and continues to be a great place to work in the federal government.” Borchardt retires after 30 years of service.
Satorius joined the NRC in 1989, and served a variety of leadership positions within the agency including: Deputy Director in the Office of Enforcement, Chief of the Performance Assessment Section in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, Deputy Director of Reactor Projects in Region IV, and he became Director of the Office of Federal and State Materials and Environmental Management Programs in October 2011.
