Savannah River-Developed Rad Scanner Deployed at Second Port

A radiation detection system developed at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River National Laboratory went into service at the Port of New York and New Jersey this year, lab management contractor Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) announced.

The On-Dock Rail Straddle Carrier Portal Monitoring System is designed to detect radiation inside intermodal shipping containers: ubiquitous metal boxes that can be stacked on ocean vessels, trains, or truck trailers. The system mounts panels to the sides of the containers and “is expected to save significant time and space requirements for scanning these containers,” according to an SRNS press release last week.

The system was deployed at the Port of Tacoma in Washington state last year, the contractor said.

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions is a team led by Fluor, with members Huntington Ingalls Industries and Honeywell.
