The price tag for the Savannah River Site’s Salt Waste Processing Facility is set to increase by approximately $400 million according to a new estimate Parsons has submitted to the Department of Energy, WC Monitor has learned. Senior DOE officials, including Deputy Secretary Daniel Poneman, were briefed on the new estimate-at-completion yesterday. The new estimate represents a 30 percent increase to the SWPF’s current baseline cost estimate of approximately $1.34 billion. DOE requested that Parsons develop the new estimate to determine the impacts on the SWPF of continued delays in delivery of a key component—a set of 10 large vessels—as well as the impacts of Parsons’ attempts to mitigate the impacts of the vessel delays in construction of the facility.
DOE’s Office of Environmental Management declined to comment on the results of Parsons’ new estimate yesterday. “During the construction of the Salt Waste Processing Facility at SRS we remain focused on safety and the quality of the facility and its major components. The Department received the EAC from Parsons late last week and will not be able to release any details until such time as it has been completely reviewed,” EM spokesman Colin Jones said in a written response.
