SEALED SOURCES FROM VERMONT TO BE THE FIRST DISPOSAL AT WCS

By ExchangeMonitor

The first shipment of low-level radioactive waste that will be disposed in Waste Control Specialists’ Andrews, Texas facility will be a Class B drum of medical sealed sources from Vermont, sent by Bionomics Inc., as early as April 23. Bionomics, based in Oak Ridge, Tenn., serves generators across the country, including in Texas and Vermont. The company was the first to sign a disposal contract with WCS, in June 2011. “We’ve been working for two years on getting something in. We’ve got the first contract with WCS, we were the first shipped to get a [Texas Department of State Health Services] permit, and now we have the first shipment scheduled,” John McCormick, vice president with Bionomics, told RW Monitor. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has not yet issued the final amendment which will certify WCS’ site for operations, but that may happen as soon as this week. Depending on the date of approval, McCormick said Bionomics plans to have waste at WCS’ site April 23, or April 30.
