The Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday unanimously cleared Defense Secretary nominee Ashton Carter to the Senate floor for an upcoming confirmation vote. The committee voted 26-0, after which Carter’s nomination was immediately reported to the floor. A full vote before the Senate is expected by the end of the week. Carter cruised through his first and only nomination hearing before the committee, and is not expected to face much opposition in the upcoming vote. During last week’s hearing, Carter signaled a commitment to modernizing nuclear weapons within the current triad structure. President Barack Obama nominated Carter for the post in December after current Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced resignation plans in November.
