Parts of the Pantex Plant, the National Nuclear Security Administration’s main nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facility, are expected to shut down today as part of an emergency drill, the contractor running the site announced.
Personnel across the Amarillo, Texas, site will participate in the exercise, Pantex prime Consolidated Nuclear Security said in a press release last week.
“Emergency exercises test the ability of emergency personnel to respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations and ensure the public, Pantex employees, and the environment would be protected in the event of an actual emergency,” according to the announcement.
Consolidated Nuclear Security, led by Bechtel National, manages both Pantex and its sister site in Oak Ridge, Tenn., the Y-12 National Security Complex.
