SONGS Decommissioning Suitor Lists Grows to Three

By ExchangeMonitor
Team Holtec, a subsidiary of Holtec International, has submitted a bid for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station’s estimated $4.4 billion decommissioning contract, which brings the list of confirmed suitors to three.

Holtec International Senior Vice President Pierre Paul Oneid confirmed the group’s bid on Monday. Team Holtec is competing against a partnership of AECOM and EnergySolutions and a team led by Bechtel.

“We’re very proud of (the bid),” Oneid said.

While there is no definitive timeline, Oneid said his group anticipates a decision around mid-2016. SONGS began operations in 1968, retiring Unit 1 in 1992 and placing it into SAFSTOR. Southern California Edison retired Units 2 and 3 in 2013, when replacement steam generator issues proved too expensive to fix.
