Senate Armed Services Committee staffer Robert Soofer has been selected for appointment as deputy assistant defense secretary for nuclear and missile defense policy, the Pentagon announced Wednesday.
Soofer’s latest job on Capitol Hill was as staff lead for the panel’s Strategic Forces Subcommittee, covering nuclear, arms control, and missile defense issues, according to the Defense Department release.
His three decades of work in the Senate and Defense Department also includes a stint as strategic forces policy adviser to former Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), according to Soofer’s LinkedIn page.
Soofer is expected to help guide development of the new Pentagon-led Nuclear Posture Review, which is due by the end of 2017 and will set the nation’s nuclear arms policy for up to a decade.
