As the NNSA figures out how to deal with the Government Accountability Office’s decision to sustain protests of its Y-12/Pantex contract, B&W Y-12 President and General Manager Chuck Spencer emphasized yesterday that employees at Y-12 should stay focused on the mission at the site. “It’s also important to understand that both corporate parent companies [B&W and Bechtel] remain squarely committed to our success on this contract,” Spencer said in a message to employees yesterday. “Although the companies are competing for the combined Y-12/Pantex contract, the leadership of both organizations has made it clear that we are to remain focused on cooperation and collaboration to make B&W Y-12 as safe, secure and productive as possible. I have discussed this many times with Deputy General Manager Jim Haynes, who was named president of Consolidated Nuclear Security, and we are both dedicated to ensuring that everyone at Y-12 continues to work as a team.”
He said the NNSA had not provided any direction about how it would react to the GAO’s decision. “At this point, we don’t have any immediate guidance from our customer related to this announcement, and that’s appropriate given the complexity of this matter,” Spencer said. “We don’t know what the timeline will be for future action, whether there will be any additional data gathering or bid proposal work, or how our contract arrangements will be handled. There will likely be clarity on those matters in the future, and we’ll share that information with you when we can.”
