Savannah River Remediation, the liquid waste contractor for the Savannah River Site, has completed bulk grouting activities at Savannah River’s Tanks 18 and 19, moving them closer to operational closure. Grouting work began at the two tanks, which have been largely emptied of radioactive waste, in early April and since then, more than 3 million gallons of concrete grout have been poured into the tanks. With bulk grouting completed, SRR will now work to grout related equipment and to cap the tanks. The Department of Energy and SRR expect to wrap up grouting of the tanks in September, ahead of a regulatory milestone to have the tanks closed by the end of this year, according to an SRR release issued yesterday. “Closing these tanks ends many years of excellent work and a lot of safe operations,” SRR President and Project Manager Dave Olson said in the release. “We have some work remaining to completely fill and cap the tanks, but, with bulk grouting complete, we have eliminated considerable risk for our workers and the environment.”
