Savannah River Site expects to save $606,000 per year through revising preventive maintenance work schedules within its Savannah River Tritium Enterprise (SRTE), a project the lab started in January 2015, according to SRS officials. The point of the revised schedules is to align with “actual requirements and needs,” according to an SRS press release. The program is projected to save more than 4,000 man hours per year in SRTE maintenance mechanics’ field time, and is one of 26 SRTE “Continuous Improvement” programs that have totaled $4.6 million in “validated savings” so far this fiscal year. Savannah River Nuclear Solutions spokeswoman Angie French told Weapons Complex Morning Briefing that the company began analyzing PM schedules in June 2014, and began implementing the revised schedules in January 2015.
Individual PM frequencies for SRTE’s thousands of systems range from weekly to multi-year. “Our operating experience told us that a lot of these schedules could be reduced and still ensure safe, efficient operations,” Kirsten Aylward, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions SRTE Maintenance Manager, said in a statement. “So we took a closer look to figure out how often each of these PMs really needed to be performed.”
