The first set of long-awaited vessels for the Salt Waste Processing Facility will arrive on the Savannah River Site on Thursday and be off-loaded as early as that afternoon. In all, six vessels are expected to arrive at the site between Thursday and Saturday, with all six scheduled be off-loaded by Monday. A second set of four vessels is scheduled to arrive at the site on June 16-17.
The delivery of the vessels has been delayed numerous times due to fabrication and other issues, at one point leading SWPF contractor Parsons to terminate its subcontract with the initial vendor for the vessels and hire a new firm to complete the work. The delay in receiving the vessels has been a key factor in a new increased cost estimate for the plant, which was submitted to DOE by Parsons last month.
