The Texas Compact Commission has scheduled its first meeting since being reconfigured by Texas Gov. Rick Perry in September. The Commission will meet Nov. 9 in Austin, just a day before Waste Control Specialists will host its opening ceremony at the company’s Andrews, Texas disposal facility. Though the agenda has not yet been decided upon, the Compact Commission has to amend its bylaws and streamline its approval process before it can begin working to approve contracts for disposal at WCS.
While the Compact Commission brings new members up to speed and begins work on hiring a permanent executive director and other administrative details, the clock is ticking on WCS’ one year curie limit exception. Approved by the Texas legislature and effective as of Sept. 1, the exception will allow WCS to bury up to 220,000 curies during the first year of operations, as opposed to the 120,000-curie limit that will go into effect after Sept. 1, 2012. Despite the time sensitivity for WCS, it’s unclear when the Texas Compact Commission and Texas regulators the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will be done with all of their work to smooth the way for operations to actually begin in Andrews.
