The Japanese Ministry of the Environment has selected Toshiba and Mizuho to lead a group of 11 other entities in a five-year project to construct a large-scale carbon capture and storage demonstration facility at the Mikawa Power Plant in Omuta, Toshiba announced Tuesday. “Through this project in Mikawa, we aim to further increase the efficiency and scale of CCS as a step toward global promotion of cleaner energy production,” Takao Konishi, vice president of Toshiba’s Energy Systems and Solutions Co., said in a press release.
The new facility will be designed to capture more than 500 tons of CO2 a day, roughly half of the plant’s daily emissions. The plant is currently being retrofitted to accommodate energy generation from coal or biomass. “When the demonstration facility is completed in 2020, it will become the world’s first power plant equipped with a large-scale carbon capture demonstration facility that is capable of capturing carbon dioxide from a biomass power plant,” the release says.
