Transformer fire extinguished at Georgia Power nuclear plant

By ExchangeMonitor

A transformer fire was put out Tuesday afternoon at the Vogtle nuclear complex in Waynesboro, Ga., Southern Co. utility Georgia Power said in a news release, saying the incident did not threaten public safety.

The alert was declared around noon Tuesday, which prompted notification of the both state agencies and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the company said in a Wednesday press release.

“There was no impact on the safety or health of the public or plant personnel,” an NRC spokesperson said via email to Exchange Monitor Wednesday. “This event only affected Unit 2, and the two newer reactors at the site were not impacted.”

The fire was put out by company employees, the Associated Press reported, quoting a company spokesperson. The wire service report added that the cause of the fire has not been determined. No injuries resulted from the blaze and all four nuclear reactors at the complex continued to produce electricity.
