TRUCK TIPS OVER AT HANFORD, SPILLS CONTAMINATED SOIL

By ExchangeMonitor

A driver was injured when a truck tipped onto its side and spilled contaminated soil Tuesday at Hanford, according to Washington Closure Hanford. A semi-tractor was pulling a load with a 25-ton capacity roll-off container loaded with soil contaminated with lead from D Area. It was on Route 3 North headed toward the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility in central Hanford when the accident occurred. The driver was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland and was expected to be held there overnight, but his injuries did not appear to be life threatening. A fixative was applied to the spilled soil, which had no radioactive contamination, and cleanup of the soil was planned to begin the next day. Washington Closure is continuing to investigate the accident. No cause has been determined, but patches of freezing fog did make some roads in the Hanford region icy Tuesday.
