Weaver sworn in as commissioner; NRC taps King as top executive

By ExchangeMonitor

Doug Weaver was officially sworn in as a Nuclear Regulatory Commission member this week.

Weaver, nominated in November by President Donald Trump, was confirmed by the full Senate last week in a 71-to-29 vote. He will now serve the remainder of former commissioner Annie Caputo’s term, set to expire on June 30, 2026.

Weaver, a former Navy Officer, worked nearly 20 years at NRC and another 10 years in the nuclear industry. He held management jobs for companies such as Holtec and Westinghouse. Prior to his nomination, Weaver led his own consulting firm, Atomic Safety.

Weaver is one of a select few former NRC staff members to become a commissioner.

“It is an honor to have been nominated by President Trump to serve on the Commission at this pivotal moment and I am grateful for this opportunity,” Weaver said in NRC’s Monday press release. “I look forward to working with Chairman Wright and the other Commissioners to help NRC achieve its mission in service to our nation.”

With Weaver now being sworn in, the commission panel is back to full strength with all five members. The commission was down to two members at one period this year with only Bradley Crowell and Matthew Marzano on the panel.

In another personnel development, NRC last week appointed Mike King as its executive director for operations. The agency announced King’s selection Dec. 19.

This executive role is the highest-ranking NRC career position with responsibilities for overseeing the agency’s operational and administrative functions and serving as the chief operating officer.

King has served as the acting executive director for operations for the agency since June 29, after then lead Mirela Gavrilas retired from the agency on June 28.

King has been with NRC since 2005 and has served in a multitude of management roles. Prior to working as the acting executive director for operations, King was on a special assignment to the Office of the Executive Director for Operations as the special assistant for ADVANCE Act Implementation.
