A lake effect snow warning continues in effect into Saturday morning for the area around the West Valley Demonstration Project nuclear cleanup site in Western New York.
New snow accumulations on Friday and into Saturday morning could range from 7 to 15 inches,, according to the forecast for West Valley, N.Y., about 35 miles south of Buffalo. Daytime highs are expected to stay below 30 degrees Fahrenheit and wind gusts could reach 25 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
On Friday, a site spokesperson said via email the snow had not delayed or canceled work shifts. “We were able to keep up with the snow clearing.”
Lake effect snow is a weather service term that describes a situation where cold air, typically from Canada, moves across the Great Lakes and can result in snowfall accumulating at two or more inches per hour.
West Valley is currently being remediated by a Jacobs-BWX Technologies joint venture in a contract that is scheduled to expire in February. Jacobs recently spun off its DOE contracts to Amentum Holdings, which is now a publicly-traded company. A group led by BWXT, with Jacobs Technology as one of the junior partners, was awarded a new 10-year contract Oct. 31. DOE has yet to announce a notice to proceed with transition.
