The consortium of Bechtel and Westinghouse and Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) have agreed on major commercial terms of the engineering procurement and construction contract to use Westinghouse’s AP1000 reactor technology at Poland’s first nuclear plant.
PEJ handed over the leading role of the project to Bechtel in August. The companies’ have now set the foundation for further negotiations on the remaining terms under the engineering, procurement and construction contract, PEJ President Marek Woszczyk said in Bechtel’s Wednesday press release.
Bechtel expects negotiations to be completed by the end of the year. The first Polish plant in Choczewo, Poland expects to have three AP1000 reactors with a total generating capacity of 3,750 megawatts. Bechtel, Westinghouse and PEJ hope to have the first commercial up and running by around 2036, Woszczyk said.
“This agreement reflects the momentum we’ve built with PEJ, and it’s a vote of confidence in American nuclear technology and know-how,” Dena Volovar, president of Bechtel’s nuclear, security and environmental business, said.
Volovar continued, “Using modern execution tools to drive efficient delivery, we’re bringing that experience to Poland, and we’re building local capability as we go. By the time this plant is running, Polish companies and Polish workers will be part of a nuclear industry that can compete for decades.”
Westinghouse, Bechtel and PEJ signed an engineering development agreement in April 2025 to launch the initial efforts to build a civil nuclear power plant in Poland.
