WIPP EMPLOYEE DIES IN TRUCK ACCIDENT NEAR SITE

By ExchangeMonitor

A Waste Isolation Pilot Plant employee died in an accident between a pickup truck and a tractor trailer on the WIPP access road Monday afternoon in which both vehicles burst into flames. While the driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, a WIPP employee driving a government pickup truck died at the scene, according to a Department of Energy occurrence report. The tractor trailer was carrying dirt and was “not a WIPP truck,” New Mexico State Police Sergeant Lawrence Murray told WC Monitor. WIPP has a north and a south access road that connect the site to public highways. Murray said that the cause of the accident and the identity of the victim were still under investigation. “Both vehicles burst into flame after the collision, so there was not much to identify. We have to get positive identification on the truck driver,” he said. Murray added that the accident scene was like “if you throw a match on a roll of paper towels and you let it burn down to the roll itself, whatever doesn’t burn. We don’t have much information to go off from the vehicle.” DOE’s Carlsbad Field Office referred inquires to the New Mexico State Police.
