WIPP MANNED REENTRY DELAYED DUE TO LACK OF RADIATION MONITORS

By ExchangeMonitor

Though the Department of Energy said it planned to reenter the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant underground yesterday, the operation was delayed due to a lack of real-time radiation monitors. The Department earlier this week announced its intent to send a team of eight recovery workers into the mine April 1 for the first time since the Feb. 14 radiation release in an effort to identify the source of the contamination. "Today’s scheduled personnel re-entry to the WIPP underground was postponed due to a delivery delay of the lapel monitors workers would wear on their outer clothing to detect radiation. Safety requirements for re-entry work require this type of personal protective equipment and entry will be postponed until they arrive," DOE said in a release yesterday.
