Following an earlier glitch, the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management has set a Sept. 10 deadline for interested parties to respond to a Request for Information (RFI) on transporting transuranic waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico.
DOE “has identified a technical issue affecting the WIPPTransportation@cbfo.doe.gov email inbox that may have prevented the receipt of certain capability statements and inquiries submitted in response to the WIPP Transportation Services RFI,” according to a recent online notice. As a result, anyone who sent comments but did not receive a confirmation receipt should resubmit their materials.
“The Department of Energy apologizes for any inconvenience this issue may have caused and appreciates your cooperation,” according to the notice.
The new small business contract eventually resulting from this acquisition “will replace one existing contract providing the same services that is currently set to expire in June 2028,” DOE said. The RFI was posted online July 22.
The contract would involve transport of both contact-handled and the more radioactive remote-handled transuranic waste from generator sites across the country. The contact person is Contracting Officer Dustin Dalton, Dustin.Dalton@cbfo.doe.gov.
CAST Specialty Transportation is the incumbent. It has a contract that started in June 2022 and is valued at up to $100 million, according to a DOE contract summary.\
