Under current law, entities are unable to gain state approval to build nuclear power plants because no federal storage facility capable of taking the waste exists. The new bill lifts this requirement, among other changes. With Tuesday’s Assembly approval, the bill now moves to the Senate.
The bill also realigns energy priorities in Wisconsin. Under the changes, energy decisions would adhere to following priorities: 1) energy conservation and efficiency; 2) noncombustible renewable energy resources; 3) combustible renewable energy resources; and 4) nonrenewable combustible energy resources.
The Wisconsin State Journal reported Tuesday that bill author Rep. Kevin Peterson (R) introduced the legislation to start a discussion in Wisconsin about moving away from fossil fuel energy sources.
