Wrap Up

By Brian Bradley

IN THE DNFSB

The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board is scheduled to hold a public meeting at its Washington headquarters on June 3. Topics to be discussed during the meeting include an overview of planned responses to matters raised in recent Organizational Assessments, existing Board performance metrics, existing Board policies and technical organizational structure. The meeting is set to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

IN DoD

The Defense Department held a whole-of-government exercise earlier this month at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor that simulated a scenario where local, state and federal experts would respond to mock home-grown terrorists and a nuclear incident. The Nuclear Weapon Accident Incident Exercise (NUWAIX) 2015 set the stage for a full government framework to mitigate the consequences of an incident involving a nuclear weapon in DoD custody at a military base in the continental U.S, according to a Pentagon press release. Participants included the Energy Department, the Assistant Defense Secretary for Nuclear Matters, U.S. Northern Command, the FBI, the Homeland Security Department, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Agriculture Department, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration.

IN THE NAVY

President Barack Obama  this week nominated Rear Adm. Joe Tofalo for appointment to the rank of vice admiral and assignment as commander of Naval Submarine Forces, commander of Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and commander of Allied Submarine Command. Tofalo currently serves as Navy Director of Undersea Warfare, N97, in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Vice Adm. Mike Connor currently serves as chief of the three commands that Tofalo was nominated to lead.
