X-Energy has entered into a strategic partnership with Amazon, Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power and Doosan to speed deployment of small modular reactors to meet growing data center demands in the United States.
The Rockville, Md. based advanced nuclear company announced the four-company collaboration in its Monday press release.
KHNP is the primary South Korean nuclear plant operator as it operates all 26 reactors in the country. Doosan is a South Korean-based multi-national construction machinery company.
The partnership will leverage nuclear technology, energy project delivery and cloud infrastructure to develop and create Xe-100s, X-Energy said.
Xe-100 is a generation-IV high-temperature gas-cooled reactor X-Energy has developed. X-Energy is working to deploy its first Xe-100 reactor at Dow’s UCC Operations manufacturing site in Seadrift, Texas.
The U.S. nuclear company’s construction permit application is under review by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which could be completed within 18 months.
There is a recent $350 billion trade deal in place between the United States and South Korea, and the companies also intend to mobilize up to $50 billion in public and private capital to support the future of United States nuclear energy, according to the press release.
KHNP, Doosan and additional Korean industrial partners have agreed to support Amazon and X-Energy’s plans to deploy more than five gigawatts or 5,000 megawatts throughout the U.S. by 2039, while exploring other global opportunities, according to the press release.
In 2024, X-Energy, Energy Northwest and Amazon agreed to work together to deploy Xe-100s in Washington state. Energy Northwest’s site is planned to have four initial Xe-100s but has plans to expand to 12, according to the press release.
