Legislation introduced this week in the House Science, Space and Technology Committee would direct the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to set up an artificial intelligence (AI) nuclear evaluation program.
The bipartisan bill is sponsored by Rep. Celeste Maloy (R-Utah) and is cosponsored by Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-Calif.). The Advanced Artificial Intelligence Nuclear Evaluation Program would be established by Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, and the DOE’s semi-autonomous agency in charge of maintaining the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile.
This bill was introduced the week after the White House announced plans to invest $5 billion into the Donald Trump administration’s Genesis Mission initiative to leverage AI in science-related efforts in many major government agencies, including DOE and NNSA. DOE also said last week it selected 278 projects, encompassing 342 institutions, under the Genesis Mission’s request for applications.
