The Department of Energy’s Hanford Field Office in Richland, Wash., plans to award a no-bid contract to the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Academy to hold a four-day process safety “boot camp,” according to a recent online procurement notice.
In the notice, the Academy is called “the only responsible source that can provide the management training for the Hanford Site’s “Direct-Feed Low-Activity Waste (DFLAW) facility’s high-hazard radiological and chemical vitrification operations.”
In October 2025, the DFLAW facility at the Bechtel-built Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) started turning some of Hanford’s less-radioactive tank waste into glass.
The Academy is the holder of a “proprietary” training system, according to the notice that appeared online July 29 in the System for Award Management (SAM.gov) site. As a result, the Academy is the “only source with the legal and technical authority to customize, modify, and integrate DFLAW-specific technical scenarios and case studies into the certified curriculum. “
The “notice of intent to award a sole-source contract” was initially published July 15. No dollar amount was listed.
