Brookfield and Columbia, S.C.-based The Nuclear Company formed a new company to fulfill the role as project manager for the completion of Units 2 and 3 of Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Plant in Fairfield County, S.C.
The company will combine Brookfield’s global assessment management and energy infrastructure development abilities with The Nuclear Company’s nuclear project delivery expertise, according to The Nuclear Company’s Monday press release.
The new company’s responsibilities include end-to-end project management, licensing support and oversight of engineering, procurement and construction of Westinghouse’s AP1000 and AP300 reactor technologies exclusively. Brookfield, a privately-held global asset management company, is a majority owner of Westinghouse.
The two companies said that the new company’s role managing the project will be contingent on the final investment decision. The project remains subject to further evaluation, regulatory approvals and the execution of definitive agreements, according to the release.
In October 2025, the South Carolina-owned utility Santee Cooper selected Brookfield to complete the two partially built AP1000 reactors at the Virgil C. Summer nuclear site in Jenkinsville, S.C., now named the Fairfield Nuclear Project. In that same week, Brookfield, Cameco and Westinghouse agreed to a deal with the Department of Energy to build $80 billion worth of Westinghouse reactor technologies.
Santee Cooper and Brookfield inked a memorandum of understanding to perform a feasibility study on the two incomplete reactor units at the Virgil C. Summer site in December 2025. Under the memorandum, Brookfield must determine initial feasibility and establish a target date for its final investment decision by June 26.
