BWX Technologies, a top contractor in the Department of Energy’s nuclear cleanup and security operations, said Tuesday it is promoting its chief operating officer to the position of president and CEO.
Rex Geveden will take the job, along with a position on the BWXT Board of Directors, on Jan. 1 of next year. He will take over for President and CEO Peyton “Sandy” Baker, who will stay on as a special adviser before formally retiring on May 31, according to a BWXT press release. “In addition to providing general strategic advice, Mr. Baker is expected to provide oversight and governance with respect to integration of the company’s anticipated Canada acquisition and the company’s safety and security activities at its nuclear facilities,” the release says.
Formerly Babcock & Wilcox, BWXT split off in 2015 with businesses including naval reactor manufacturing; management, operational, environmental, and technical services; and nuclear parts production. Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises took the power generation segment.
The $1.4 billion business is based in Lynchburg, Va., and has six primary North American locations.
Geveden joined the company as chief operating officer last year after a stint as executive vice president of Teledyne Technologies and following 17 years at NASA, including as COO.
“The Board is extremely pleased to have Rex as the company’s next President and CEO,” BWXT Executive Chairman John Fees said in the release. “He brings more than 25 years of industry experience and leadership ability to the position. During his time as COO Rex has demonstrated the strategic vision and execution delivery required to take BWXT to the next level of growth and shareholder value.”
Among its businesses, BWXT is a partner in the management and operations contractors for DOE’s Los Alamos National Laboratory and Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico, as well as the Nevada National Security Site. It also is a partner in the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.
