Democrat House Appropriator to run in redrawn Florida district

By ExchangeMonitor

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) will run for another term in Florida’s 20th Congressional district amid Florida’s new redrawn district maps, she announced on her X account May 22.

Wasserman Schultz has been a representative for over 20 years. She is a member of the House Appropriation Committee and its Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies.

The subcommittee is responsible for funding the Department of Energy and Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

“Today I’m announcing my candidacy for reelection in Congressional district 20. Because we can not let [President Donald] Trump destroy Broward County’s power,” Wasserman Schultz said. “I’ll continue to use my seniority in Washington to make Broward a safer, less expensive place to live, raise a family, and retire.”

Wasserman Schultz currently represents the 25th Congressional district of Florida. However, in the redistricting map battle backed by Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, that district has been dissolved. From 2005 to 2013, Wasserman Schultz used to represent the 20th Congressional district.

The 20th Congressional district of Florida was previously represented by Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D), who resigned from Congress in April after allegations of stealing federal funds. Her resignation came before the House Ethics Committee was set to hold a hearing on whether she should be expelled from Congress.

Local Florida news outlets have reported that Cherfilus-McCormick is seeking reelection. The two Democratic lawmakers will likely have to duke it out in a primary election for the newly drawn 20th congressional district.
